The Sacrament of Confirmation finds its basis in the Scriptures. In Acts of the Apostles, the event is described:
“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” (Acts 2:1-4)
This reception of the Holy Spirit is essential to the Christian life, for it is the Holy Spirit who teaches us how to pray and to live the life of Christ. As the Church teaches, "By the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1285)
Adults who have not previously received the Sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to do so. Adult Confirmation classes are offered in the Fall of each year and extend into the Spring. After the completion of instruction, the Bishop administers Confirmation in the parish.Copyright 2011 Seton Catholic Church • Bakersfield, California • 661-587-3626
